Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic Acid is a type of vitamin that dissolves in water and can be found in citrus fruits, berries, vegetables, and is also available as a dietary supplement. Additionally, it's used in face serums to help with skin issues like melasma and wrinkles. Vitamin C is important for preventing and treating scurvy.

Ascorbic acid belongs to a group of medicines known as antioxidants. Our body needs it to heal wounds, improve the absorption of iron from plant foods, and boost the immune system.

Acetylcysteine

Acetylcysteine is often used to treat coughs and various lung conditions. It's also employed for the flu, dry eyes, and other health issues. It helps to loosen and clear mucus from your lungs, making it easier for you to breathe.

Folic Acid

Folic acid and its forms, which are types of vitamin B9, are commonly used to address deficiencies and prevent complications during pregnancy.

Folic acid is specifically used to prevent and treat low blood levels of folate (folate deficiency) and high blood levels of homocysteine (hyperhomocysteinemia). Pregnant individuals take folic acid to avoid serious birth defects like spina bifida. It is also utilized for various other conditions, such as depression, stroke, decline in memory and thinking skills, among others.

Here's how folic acid is used:

  1. Treating or preventing folate deficiency anemia.
  2. Aiding in the proper development of the baby's brain, skull, and spinal cord during pregnancy. This helps prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida.
  3. Reducing side effects from methotrexate, a medicine used for severe arthritis, Crohn's disease, or psoriasis.

Folic acid may also have positive effects on other health conditions:

  • Diabetes: Folate supplements may improve blood sugar regulation and reduce insulin resistance in people with diabetes, especially if their folate levels are low due to the use of the diabetes drug metformin.
  • Fertility Issues: Folate can enhance egg quality, promote egg growth, and aid in implantation in the uterus. This could increase the chances of getting pregnant and carrying a baby to term, particularly for those using assisted reproductive technology.
  • Inflammation: Folic acid and folate supplements have shown potential in reducing markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein, which is associated with many diseases.
  • Kidney Disease: In cases of chronic kidney disease, where homocysteine levels can rise due to kidney damage, folic acid supplements may help lower homocysteine levels and reduce the risk of heart disease in individuals with kidney disease.
Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic acid, a B vitamin and essential nutrient, is crucial for all animals. It plays a key role in synthesizing coenzyme A, which is essential for breaking down fatty acids, and in the synthesis and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Pantothenic acid is formed by combining pantoic acid and β-alanine.

Studies have explored its potential to lower cholesterol levels in individuals with dyslipidemia, a condition marked by high levels of fat or lipids in the blood (like LDL "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides) and low levels of HDL "good" cholesterol. When CoA levels are low, it may hinder the breakdown and clearance of fats in the blood.

There's also a suggestion that pantothenic acid might act as an antioxidant, reducing low-grade inflammation present in the early stages of heart disease.

Moreover, pantothenic acid is necessary for producing blood cells and helps convert the food you eat into energy.

Cholecalciferol

Cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D₃ is a type of vitamin that dissolves in fat and helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. It's crucial to have the right amount of vitamin D₃, calcium, and phosphorus to build and maintain strong bones. The body produces vitamin D₃ when the skin is exposed to sunlight. However, using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, limited sun exposure, having dark skin, or getting older can prevent getting enough vitamin D₃ from the sun.Doctors use vitamin D₃, often combined with calcium, to treat or prevent bone disorders like rickets and osteomalacia. Vitamin D₃ is also used with other medications to address low levels of calcium or phosphate caused by certain disorders, such as hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism, and familial hypophosphatemia. In kidney disease, vitamin D₃ is used to maintain normal calcium levels and support regular bone growth.

Zinc

Zinc is super important for your body because your body can't make or store it on its own. It helps with lots of things like gene expression, immune function, making proteins and DNA, and even healing wounds. Zinc is like a superhero supporting over 300 enzymes that do essential tasks in your body, like helping with metabolism, digestion, and nerve function.

Besides being a hero for your immune system, zinc is crucial for your skin, helps make DNA, and plays a big role in growing and developing your body. It also does cool things like acting as an antioxidant.

Your body needs zinc for growth, especially for cells to grow and divide. Plus, it's essential for your senses of taste and smell. If you don't get enough zinc, it can mess with your ability to taste or smell because an important enzyme depends on it.

Taking zinc right when you start feeling sick might help you get better faster, and if you have skin ulcers, zinc could be helpful. For kids with low zinc levels from not getting enough food, zinc can even reduce diarrhea symptoms.

Excitingly, research suggests that zinc might slow down the progression of certain eye diseases. So, getting enough zinc is like giving your body a superhero boost for a healthy and well-functioning life!
